“While most of the city is just beginning to awake, the sellers at Banjarmasin’s floating market have already made most of their sales for the day. From 4 to 7 a.m. everyday, these vendors offer wares ranging from fruits and bread to rattan hats and baskets. Visitors can reach the market by klotok, pulling up beside various boats to sample and buy. At one restaurant boat we enjoyed drinking mugs of tea and eating soto Banjar, Banjarmasin’s most popular traditional food. While most people now look to larger big box stores to buy their goods, the floating market reminds of a time when local markets were the sole manner by which people conducted their weekly shopping. In this way, Banjarmasin truly lives up to its name Kota Seribu Sungai — ‘The City of 1,000 Rivers.'”
